CONTROLLING THE ALGORITHM
User interface features to help users gain control over their social media.
ABOUT
Social media platforms have algorithms designed to keep user attention and support corporate interests. Design can work to address these concerns by creating transparent and customizable features. Ultimately, this design imagines a new way for users to gain control over their algorithm and screen timer.

DESIGN PROCESS
This project drew inspiration from literature and existing screen timers, incorporating essential elements such as not interrupting users while scrolling. From this, storyboards (right) and paper prototypes (below) were made to elicit feedback from designers.
The final prototype was developed in AdobeXD. Throughout this design process, interviews were conducted and analyzed helping me gain insights into the relationships users have with their media platforms.
This work helped me further explore not just the context of social media but how important it is to use the tools of designers to help address power differences between corporations and individuals. Exploring how social media platforms can be restructured to support individuals, helped me understand the importance of the context of design. It allowed me to explore how we can integrate seamless technology while still considering the users' underlying needs and how design impacts their behavior.
